I was interested in Sen. Charles Schumer’s personal support of marriage among his staff.

Most people know that being married (compared to living together) helps people live longer, but studies show that it also helps people financially, in their career, reduces substance abuse, etc.

Marriage is more than a piece of paper. When you love someone enough to stand in front of a whole bunch of people and declare that you love that person “for better or for worse till death do us part,” then you are more willing to be selfless, to sacrifice for their good. When that happens, you both do better. It gives you options that single people don’t have. The Schumers know this because they have been married 32 years.
