■ Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, will tour Poulin Grain, 6005 Route 11, Canton, at 10 a.m. Monday. He then will meet with students at A.A. Kingston Middle School, 54 Lawrence Ave., Potsdam, at 11:15 a.m.

■ BALMAT — A sale of the zinc mines from HudBay Minerals to Wildcat Zinc remains in the works. “We are making progress,” said Wildcat Chief Executive Officer Michael L. Hoffman. “Unfortunately, it’s not finalized yet.”

■ The Sci-Tech Center of Northern New York, 154 Stone St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 8, Columbus Day. Any child who brings in a newspaper story about exploration or discovery that day will be admitted for only $1.

■ CARTHAGE — The Carthage Central School District will honor Judith A. DeForest, former fine arts director, at a ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the high school commons. She will be the newest member of the Hall of Achievement. Mrs. DeForest served in the position from 1986 until retiring in 2003.
