Gouverneur escapes upset bid by St. Lawrence Central, 19-16

BRASHER FALLS — The St. Lawrence Central football team brought out the best in Gouverneur on Saturday.

Gouverneur (4-0) scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull out a 19-16 Northern Athletic Conference victory over upset-minded St. Lawrence.

“This group has learned how to win and today we made the big plays when we had to,” Gouverneur coach Sean Devlin said.

Wildcats quarterback Mark Horne completed 6-of-11 passes for 101 yards and carried eight times for 59 yards. Tanner Spillman gained 76 yards on 10 carries.

Gouverneur rallied on the first play of the fourth quarter on a 50-yard pass play from Horne to Cody Woods that went for a touchdown, cutting St. Lawrence’s lead to 16-13. Gouverneur then blocked an SLC punt to set up another touchdown three plays later on Horne’s run from 7 yards out to give the Wildcats their first lead of the game.

The Larries (0-4) drove the ball to the Gouverneur 16 yard-line on their next possession but were stoped on a fourth-down fumble.

Jesse Greer ran 135 yards on 27 carries and Devon Euto had 92 yards on 17 carries for SLC.

TUPPER LAKE 41, CANTON 14

Three touchdowns in the second quarter sparked Tupper Lake past host Canton.

Mitch Keniston scored on short runs of seven and one and threw an 11-yard pass to Brandon Matt Duchaine in the quarter.

Jeremt Roussel added a 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and Keniston threw his second touchdown of the day from 16 yards out to Bourbeau helping the Lumberjacks take control with a 34-6 lead after three quarters.

Canton received a 69-yard run from Peyton VanBibber in the third and Jay Proulx hauled in a 20-yard touchdown from Hunter Yerdon.

SANDY CREEK 41, PORT BRYON 0

Wyatt Bush scored three touchdowns and gained 114 yards on the ground as the Comets remained unbeaten with an impressive Section 3 Class D interconference win over Port Byron at Sandy Creek. The game was postponed Friday night because of a lack of officials.

Bush scored on runs of 20 and 58 yards in the first quarter for Sandy Creek (4-0), and returned a punt 45 yards in the third quarter. Mason McNitt and Kyle Fayette also scored on runs, and John Shirley scored on a 35-yard interception return. Port Byron fell to 3-1.

PULASKI 30, BEAVER RIVER 8

Tom Taplin rushed for 121 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the host Blue Devils to the Class D Central win over the Beavers.

Chuck Gettino added 116 rushing yards and a score for Pulaski (2-2, 2-1).

Erik Lyndaker scored for Beaver River (0-4) on a 4-yard run and added the 2-point conversion.

MEXICO 28, SOUTH JEFFERSON 26

Friday night at Adams, Kyle Myers scored on a 38-yard run in the fourth quarter as the Tigers rallied for a Class B East win over the Spartans.

South Jefferson (0-4, 0-2) trailed 14-6 at halftime but scored three straight touchdowns in the second half to seize a 26-22 lead. Logan Jones had a 34-yard TD run, Derik Hall caught a 53-yard scoring pass from Jacob Moulton and Dylan Beckstead had a 2-yard TD run for the Spartans.

Hall and Moulton also combined on an 11-yard scoring play in the second quarter.

John Eastman rushed for 254 yards and scored on runs of 67 and 65 yards for Mexico (1-3, 1-2).

ORISKANY 62, SOUTH LEWIS 30

The Falcons fell to 0-4 with a Class D Central loss at Oriskany. No other details were available.
