OGDENSBURG Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center and the Ogdensburg Lions Club have teamed up to offer free diabetes and sight screenings.
Sponsored by the Ogdensburg Lions Club, Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center will offer a diabetes education and screening event at the Dobisky Visitors Center, 100 Riverside Ave., from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 6.
The event will also feature blood pressure, glaucoma and sight screenings. Donor cards from Finger Lakes Eye and Tissue Bank, with information on donating cornea, bones or any other organs, also will be available.
Claxton-Hepburn certified diabetes educator Karen J. Cole will speak on recognizing prediabetes and steps one can take to reverse or delay the progress toward diabetes at 9:30 a.m.
At 10:30 a.m., she will give a presentation on healthy meal planning and reading nutrition labels.
Almost 26 million people in the United States have diabetes and one of every three adults has prediabetes, Ms. Cole said. So many people have diabetes today that dont have a clue they have it, organizer and Lions Club member James T. Shaw said. As Karen will tell you, we almost always catch someone at a screening. He said the event will be held at the Dobisky Center, next to Centennial Terrace and Riverview Towers, in the hopes of accommodating seniors.
For more information, call Mr. Shaw at 344-8829 or Kim Duprey at 344-2452.
