Educators from the New York Sea Grant are encouraging residents to properly dispose of prescription drugs to keep them out of the Great Lakes.
Researchers are concerned that people are flushing pills and other drugs down the toilet or running them through the drain, which could lead them to flow into the Great Lakes.
The push comes as National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day takes place today.
A four-page primer on the subject, produced in conjunction with the Illinois-Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania Sea Grant programs and the EPA Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, can be found at www.nyseagrant.org/unwantedmeds.
