Watertown district’s field building in bad shape

The Watertown City School District’s leaky athletic field building has seen better days.

Superintendent Terry N. Fralick said the building has reached a critical point where he has asked the booster club to relocate. At Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, board President Michael R. Flick recommended Mr. Fralick obtain quotes for a new metal roof before proceeding with any other renovations.

The building has been leaking for several years.

“Another rainfall caused the water to come into the concession stand,” Mr. Fralick said. “I deemed that this is not a safe environment for people to work with.”

He recommended the booster club use the Case Middle School cafeteria for future events. He was concerned about the club serving food while the building is leaking.

“The floor is compromised,” he said. “It’s spongy.”

The field building was used as a team locker room, but Athletics Director Michael A. Lennox does not allow students to use that space anymore because of the building’s condition. It is used as storage for physical education and athletic equipment and houses the public address system, a bathroom and camera equipment to videotape games.

Mr. Lennox said up to 40 people — spotters and media — may be in the building during a football game.

“Unfortunately, it’s become a little decrepit,” he said.

Board member Kenneth F. Netto wanted to know how much a metal roof would cost. Mr. Fralick plans to have quotes by the next meeting.

“Frankly, it’s a 40-year-old building,” Mr. Fralick said.
