LOWVILLE — Lewis County Sheriff Michael P. Carpinelli recently participated in the 103rd session of the National Sheriffs’ Institute.

“I walked away with a really healthy respect for this job when it’s done right,” the first-year sheriff said.

The weeklong institute, held from Sept. 16 to 22 in Aurora, Colo., also provided a “broader perspective” on the job, he said.

All expenses were covered by the National Institute of Corrections and National Sheriffs’ Association.

Sheriff Carpinelli and 28 other sheriffs from around the country discussed such topics as public safety, criminal justice system policy, community relations, and organizational effectiveness and efficiency at the institute, according to a release from the National Sheriff’s Association.

Former Lewis County Sheriff L. Michael Tabolt, who retired at the end of 2011, participated in the program in 2004.
