WATSON — State police allege that a Glenfield woman accepted responsibility for her son’s accident to cover up his unlicensed driving.

Sheila M. Smith, 49, of 6451 Pine Grove Road, and her son, Johnathan L. Weiler, 26, same address, were both charged Monday with making a false written statement, a misdemeanor.

Police said Ms. Smith reported Thursday that she had been driving when she was forced off Austin Road in the town of Watson by a hit-and-run driver, The investigation revealed, however, that she was home when her car was damaged, police said.

Her son actually had lost control of the car while being upset over a breakup with his girlfriend, police said.
