Sackets Harbor woman readies for opening of a Pilates studio in the village

SACKETS HARBOR — The operator of a new Pilates studio in the village said the biggest adjustment she will have to make is for the north country’s rough winters.

“I’m not used to snow,” said Jennifer L. Dean, owner of Lake Ontario Pilates, 205-207 W. Main St. “I’ve only seen six inches of it in my life.”

Ms. Dean, a Tennessee native, said she moved to the area to be closer to her boyfriend, who is stationed at Fort Drum. She met him through her brother, who also is stationed on post. The two men fly helicopters with the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade.

Before coming to the village, Ms. Dean had operated Collierville (Tenn.) Pilates for the past two years. She opened the studio after running Pilates classes at a nearby gym.

Ms. Dean, 31, said she had been eyeing the West Main Street location through the summer and began renting it this month. She said she chose to set up in the village because of its proximity to Fort Drum and because the village had few other exercise options.

“I’m sure when it’s two feet of snow out, it’ll be nice to have a place to walk to,” she said.

Standing near a set of Pilates machines and benches, Ms. Dean said she started doing Pilates in 2005 to help get rid of back pain from a 2002 motorcycle crash. While she already was very active, Ms. Dean said, the low impact of the exercises helped improve her posture and core muscles. She became certified to teach lessons in 2006.

As the studio opens in the next few weeks, Ms. Dean said, it’s set up to run small-group equipment classes for men and women. However, if the studio becomes popular enough, she said, she hopes to hire yoga and Zumba instructors. The large Pilates machines and benches can be folded away, making room for different classes.

Classes are scheduled to begin Oct. 15. An open house for the studio will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday. More information about the studio and the classes it provides is at
