CANTON - For the past five years, Don and Linda Kingston have operated the Barn of Terror out of their barn on County Route 34, but this year the haunted attraction is under new management and expected to be scarier than ever.

The Barn of Terror, which also now includes a 15-minute haunted hay ride that takes people around the property down to “Camp Crystal Lake,” where a campfire and one of Hollywood’s most terrifying monsters await, is now run by Gerry J. LaBaff; his wife, Crystal; and Chris A. Lavine.

“It was more kiddish before,” Mr. LaBaff said. “Last year there were a ton of college kids, and they walked away kind of depressed because it wasn’t scary. This year we upgraded.”

While teens and adults can expect to find a Barn of Terror that is truly terrifying, Mr. Lavine said they can and will tone it down for younger children or people who may be too scared.

“Before it was PG, but this year we’re R-rated,” he said. “We’ve definitely upped the ante, but we will tone it down for the kids.”

Mr. LaBaff, who noted they’re only using about one-third of the barn, said if things work out this year, people can expect an even bigger, better and scarier experience.

“If this works out, we’ll go all out in the barn next year,” Mr. LaBaff said.

While the Barn of Terror may be under new management, it is still located at Kingston’s Roadside Stand, and Mr. LaBaff said the stand will be open when they are.

“If you want pumpkins or apples, you’ll be able to get them right here,” he said, adding pumpkin decorating will also be available.

Friday evening served as their opening night and they’ll now be open through Halloween from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday with special extended hours on Halloween when they’ll be open until midnight.

Admission is $8 per person or $15 per couple. That includes a haunted hay ride, popcorn, a drink and an optional trip through the Barn of Terror for those looking for an extra scare.
