GardenShare’s Growing Community Award this year goes to Carlton L. Doane, recognizing the Canton Free-Will Dinner program and other community meals that have been inspired by it.

GardenShare annually recognizes an individual or organization whose efforts strengthen food security in the community.

Mr. Doane spearheaded the free-will dinners at Canton’s United Methodist Church in 1999 because he wanted to feed the hungry. Three Wednesdays a month for the past 13 years, there has been a community supper at the church. More than 50,000 meals have been served.
