WPBSs Whiz Quiz opens its 33rd season at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
The longest-running academic quiz production in the north country celebrates the academic excellence of high school students from both sides of the U.S.-Canada border. Its host is Glenn H. Gough.
Whiz Quiz will host 30 American high schools from Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties as they vie for the title of American champion. This competition is a single-elimination format. Each team has four members. After matches begin Monday, they will continue until the American championship match Oct. 26. The 2011 American Whiz Quiz champion was the team from Belleville Henderson Central School.
WPBS also hosts Whiz Quiz Canada. The Canadian matches will all be taped Oct. 29 and will air beginning Dec. 12. The 2011 Canadian Whiz Quiz Champion was the team from Lisgar Collegiate in Ottawa.
Each year, the American and Canadian champions meet for an international match. This year that will air Dec. 20.
