FORT DRUM — The post’s deputy commanding general of operations was assigned on Tuesday to take a leadership role at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point.

Brig. Gen. Richard D. Clarke will become the school’s commandant of cadets. The move was announced in a release from the office of the Army’s chief of staff. No information was immediately available on who would replace Gen. Clarke in the position.

Gen. Clarke first arrived on post in November 2011, replacing Brig. Gen. Jeffrey L. Bannister. He was promoted to Brigadier General in August. Among the highlights of his time on post was the organization of the Mountain Peak Exercise in July, one of the largest such exercises in nearly a decade.

At West Point, Gen. Clarke will replace Brig. Gen. Theodore D. Martin, who will be commanding general of the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif.
