Beaver River’s Cornell and Peters win Section 3 doubles title


UTICA — The Beaver River tennis doubles team of Abigail Cornell and Andrea Peters won the Section 3 Division 4 championship by beating Copenhagen’s Kelsey Pitts and Emily Griffin, 6-0, 6-0, Monday at the Utica Parkway Courts.

Cornell and Peters finished second in last year’s tournament. The Lowville doubles teams of Taylor Mooney and Ashley Willets and Courtney Lehman and Jolene Plato won their first round matches.

In the Division 4 singles tournament, Beaver River’s Kirsten Dzekian placed second. She was beaten in the final by Sauquoit Valley’s Ella Brutsky 6-2, 6-0.

In the Division 1 singles tournament at Skytop Courts on the Syracuse University campus, Watertown’s Alex Smith and Taylor McKinney won their first round matches before being eliminated in the quarterfinals.
