Matt Doheny couldn't pry an endorsement out of the powerful, influential hands of the National Rifle Association, but the Gun Owners of America Political Victory Fund, which has said the NRA isn't strident enough, says it's backing the Watertown Republican.
“Matt Doheny is a stalwart advocate for the peoples' right to keep and bear arms, and as a Representative of the 21st Congressional District, he will fight hard to keep those rights,” Tim Macy, the group's vice chairman, said in a news release Wednesday.
The National Rifle Association's Political Victory Fund endorsed Rep. Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh, earlier this month and gave him an A+ rating, which means that not only does he support the bills they like, he's also a strident gun rights advocate, in their estimation. The NRA gave Mr. Doheny an AQ, the highest rank for a non-incumbent.
But to some conservatives, the NRA doesn't go far enough. Erick Ericson, for example, writes in RedState that the NRA "aggravates" him and he supports the Gun Owners of America.
The latter group opposes Mr. Owens because he voted for Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., for speaker of the House of Representatives, among other beefs that the NRA doesn't share.
The election is Nov. 6.
