SLU’s Whelan has first-day lead at Nazareth


IRONDEQUOIT — St. Lawrence University sophomore Jack Whelan fired a four-under-par 68 to take a first-day lead and pace Saints to first in the team competition in the Nazareth Fall Invitational on Sunday at the Irondeqouit Country Club.

Whelan is three strokes ahead of Clarkson University freshman Evan Cody, who shot a one-under 71. SLU senior Jeff Dugan is fourth with a 2-over 74.

St. Lawrence, which shot a team total of 295, leads second-place Daeman College by four shots. Clarkson is sixth with a 317 in the eight-team field.

The second round is today.

n St. Lawrence University sophomore Olivia Arroyo made the semifinals in the third singles and third doubles tournaments at the New York State Division III women’s championship in Ithaca this weekend.

Arroyo lost eventual winner Mari Tzakis of New York University 6-1, 7-6 (7-2). In third doubles, senior Shannon Murphy and Arroyo fell to champions Madeline King and Tzakis of NYU, 8-4.
