Cargo ship hits shoal near Alex Bay; no spills reported

ALEXANDRIA BAY — CLAYTON – U.S. Coast Guard is investigating a minor incident involving a 728-foot Canadian cargo vessel on the St. Lawrence Seaway currently anchored just off of Clayton that reportedly struck a shoal near Alexandria Bay early Tuesday.

There is no indication of damage to the Phoenix Star or oil leaks but the Coast Guard, Seaway inspectors and a dive crew will be further assessing the ship this afternoon, according to the Coast Guard.

The vessel — which was “in ballast,” meaning there is no cargo on board — hit the Sunken Rock Shoal in the American narrows, the trickiest section of the St. Lawrence River to navigate, around 3 a.m., the Coast Guard said.
