Watertown police patrols responded early Wednesday to a possible burglary in progress at an apartment on Boyd Street, and interrupted a mans alleged sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old girl.
Robert L.J. Taplin, 21, of 619 Bronson St., was arrested on charges of third-degree rape and endangering the welfare of a child. He was detained for arraignment in City Court.
The burglary report in the lower apartment at 656 Boyd St. was received at 1:32 a.m., the same time that police allege the rape occurred.
Police said that the renter of the apartment was not home at the time, and that one of the two people involved in the sex act knows the renter.
The call for police was the second to the location in less than four hours. A trespassing incident in the same apartment was reported at 9:53 p.m. After the apartment manager could not be located, officers aimed flashlights through windows but saw nothing.
Taplin was sentenced in May in Jefferson County Court to five years probation after he pleaded guilty to attempted third-degree burglary in connection with a house intrusion Jan. 2 on West Main Street.
