As a student in the north country I have become concerned about the underreporting of human trafficking that occurs not only in the north country, but all over the state of New York, the United States and the world.
Considering that the north country is very close to international borders, the idea of smuggling people to and from Canada is a serious and, I am sure, frequent issue. The issue of human trafficking has become an increasing world issue since the 1980s, taking mostly women and children from their homes and smuggling them across international borders and around the world. The most appalling issue is that this is able to occur because of the easy access to borders and the technology today that can design passports that are identical to those that are real.
As a student, I find that it is important to connect the local community with issues that are happening worldwide. This issue of human trafficking is important as it is an invasion of human rights. It would be great to see more stories of this issue about human trafficking that occurs in the north country.
