I cannot for the life of me understand why the village of Lowville and in general, Lewis County, are not trying their hardest to get control over the Lowville Industrial Track and the Lowville and Beaver River Railroad. People seem dubious about a trail. That is only reasonable. But Genesee Valley Transportation (the owner of both railroads) has very explicitly said that they will rip up the tracks and they will sell off the land.
If these lands are not owned by the public, they will not be controlled by the public. What is to stop an all-terrain vehicle association from buying both railbeds and running their ATVs from Carthage into the village of Lowville and then back out to Croghan? Nothing! The only way the village can stop this is by supporting public ownership of this railbed. Do they really want to be bidding against someone else and then have to cough up the money to acquire these railbeds? Or wouldnt they rather get grant money to acquire them and get them under public control?
Im aghast at the short-sightedness of the residents and leaders of Lewis County.
