OGDENSBURG One local group is getting a head start on warming bellies and hearts during the holiday season.
Plans are under way for the 21st annual free community Thanksgiving dinner of Monsignor A.D. Charbonneau Council 258, Knights of Columbus, and its auxiliary, to be held at noon on the holiday, Nov. 22.
This will be our 21st year for this program, and we have had remarkable turnouts of people who are just looking to share a holiday with friends and community neighbors, Grand Knight Nelson J. Woods said. The outpouring of friendship and community support is really heartwarming.
Last year, the Knights and dozens of community volunteers prepared and served more than 600 Thanksgiving dinners, according to Mr. Woods.
We know there is a real need, he said.
The group is looking for at least 30 volunteers to help set up and decorate the hall, 721 Hasbrouck St., at 6 p.m. Nov. 20 and at 10:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Knights and other volunteers also are needed to provide transportation to the event for those who need it. Volunteers may call the club at 393-7990 and leave their name and contact formation.
The Ogdensburg Key Club has already signed on again this year, and we look forward to working with them, along with the many other volunteers, said Harry L. Lucchetti, dinner chairman. We extend an open invitation to join us on Thanksgiving Day to the whole community throughout the north country.
To make reservations and to arrange for transportation, if needed, call the Knights Hall after 4 p.m. any day.
No names are required, said Timothy Baker, organizer. Were just trying to get a head count.
Mr. Lucchetti said the group also will deliver to shut-ins, but the focus of our day is always around the community spirit and friends getting together at the club rooms, and we encourage everyone to come to the hall.
The Knights also are accepting monetary and food donations such as canned cranberries and stuffing. Food donations will be accepted from 4 to 8 p.m. at the hall. Donations of desserts should be dropped off at the hall the night before or the morning of Thanksgiving.
Monetary donations may be mailed to the Knights of Columbus Thanksgiving Dinner, 721 Hasbrouck St., Ogdensburg, N.Y. 13669, Attn: PGK Harry Lucchetti.
