POTSDAM - The village’s Planning Board has approved a plan to relocate the Sugar Shack Bakery and Cafe to 141 Market St. at the former site of Tardelli’s Restaurant.

The new location, at the corner of Market and Clough streets, will bring the cafe closer to downtown Potsdam. The application calls for 4,000 square feet of building space and 25,227 square feet of total site space.

Sugar Shack Bakery and Cafe owner Karen Rayburn said she hopes the new location - in a smaller building closer to downtown - will be better for business.

Con Mahoney, who also owns Billy’s Deli and Mahoney’s Auto Mall, previously brought the application before the board in September, but the board found issues with the site’s proposed signs and outdoor lighting, Potsdam Planning and Development Director Frederick J. Hanss said.

“We did a lot of debugging last time,” Mr. Hanss said.

The plan at that time called for Billy’s Deli to be moved to the former Tardelli building.

The revised application, presented by architect Brooks Washburn, included direct traffic signs near the parking lot entrance, additional outdoor lighting and moved the cafe’s sign backed from the street. Mr. Hanss felt the revised application addressed the board’s concerns and deemed it “adequate.”

The next step in the relocation is for Mr. Mahoney to apply to the village for a building permit, which usually takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, Mr. Hanss said.
