Saranac Lake eliminates OFA in football qualifier

CLINTONVILLE — Matt Phelan passed for 253 yards and three touchdowns to lead Section 7’s Saranac Lake to a 42-12 victory over Ogdensburg Free Academy in a state Class C qualifier game Saturday.

The Red Storm (10-0) built a 21-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 35-6 by halftime.

Seth Pickreign rushed for 78 yards on 10 carries and Kevin Morgan caught three passes for 90 yards, including two touchdowns. One of Morgan’s touchdown’s was on a 65-yard reception.

Nate Angel passed for 50 yards for the Blue Devils (4-5) and rushed for 52 yards.

PERU 35, MALONE 0

It was a rough night for the Huskies (8-2) as standout quarterback Mitchell Gallagher left the game early with an injury and Section 7’s Peru clinched a spot in the State Class B playoffs with a win at Massena High School.

Peru (9-1) only led 7-0 at halftime after a 12-yard run by MacKenzie La Rocque. Hunter Bruno scored on two short runs in the second half to extend the lead to 21-0.

Tim Remillard and Rivelino Hendrix scored rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the Indians.

BOYS SOCCER

CANTON 1, BRUSHTON-MOIRA 0

Canton fullback Brandon Rodee scored after a long pass from Jake Watson with 11 minutes, 17 seconds left in regulation to lead top-seeded Canton to a win over No. 2 Brushton-Moira (11-5-2) in the Section 10 Class C boys championship game in Massena.

Scott Wight made five saves for the Golden Bears (9-4-4 overall), who will host Section 2 champion Hoosick Falls in a first round game of the stage playoffs at 4 p.m. Tuesday at SUNY Canton.

OFA 1, POTSDAM 0

Gian Rufa scored in the first half to lead the No. 2 Blue Devils past top-seeded Potsdam (11-4-1) in the Class B championship game at SUNY Canton.

OFA (8-5-4) will face Section 2 champion Ichabod Crane at 6 p.m. Tuesday at SUNY Canton in a first round game of the state playoffs.

Jake Sias made 10 saves to lead OFA to its first title since 2003.

MALONE 3, MASSENA 0

Brandon Welch scored two goals as No. 1 Malone blanked No. 2 Massena (5-5-6) in the Class A championship game at Potsdam High School.

Malone (13-3-1) will travel to play Section 3 champion Fowler in a first round game of the state playoffs Tuesday.

Aaron Sharlow also scored for the Huskies and Austin LaMay made six saves.

CHATEAUGAY 2, EDWARDS-KNOX 1

Tyler Martin scored in the 87th minute to lead the No. 3 Bulldogs (10-4-3) past the No. 6 Cougars in a Class D quarterfinal in Chateaugay.

Chateaugay will play No. 2 Heuvelton in a semifinal at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Potsdam High School.

Connor Gotham scored for the Cougars (11-6-1).

HEUVELTON 1, MADRID-WADDINGTON 0 (OT)

Joe McDonnell scored an overtime goal to lift No. 2 Chateaugay past No. 7 Madrid-Waddington (10-7-2) in a Class D quarterfinal in Heuvelton.

Chris Power made four saves for the shutout.

HARRISVILLE 1, COLTON-PIERREPONT 0

Tyler Sale made nine saves to help lift the No. 5 Pirates over the No. 4 Colts (11-6-1) in a Class D quarterfinal in South Colton.

Tim Fowler scored for the Pirates (14-5) in the 74th minute.

Harrisville will face No. 1 Lisbon in a semifinal at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at Potsdam High School.

LISBON 2, PARISHVILLE-HOPKINTON 0

Jimmy Robinson made seven saves as the Golden Knights defeated the No. 8 Panthers (9-7-2) in a Class D quarterfinal in Lisbon. Cody James and Adam Felt scored for Lisbon (13-2-2).

GIRLS SOCCER

CANTON 2, TUPPER LAKE 0

Lauren Smith scored one goal and assisted on another as the top-seeded Golden Bears defeated the No. 3 Lumberjacks (8-7) in the Class C championship game at Massena.

Canton (12-5-1) will play Section 7 champion AuSable Valley in a first round game of the state playoffs at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Plattsburgh.

Kali Frank also scored for the Golden Bears, and Katie Clemmer made four saves.

POTSDAM 2, GOUVERNEUR 1

Nette Rishe scored the game-winning goal with 18:27 left as No. 1 Potsdam edged No. 3 Gouverneur (4-9-4) in the Class B championship at SUNY Canton.

Potsdam (9-6-2) will play Section 7 champion Plattsburgh in a first-round game of the state playoffs at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Chazy High School.

Abby Gagnon also scored for Potsdam, and Kirstin Roberts scored for Gouverneur.

MASSENA 3, MALONE 0

Dominique Valancius assisted on the first two goals and scored the final one as the No. 1 Red Raiders defeated the No. 2 Huskies (6-10-1) in the Class A championship at Potsdam High School.

Massena (14-1-1) has a bye in the first round of the state playoffs and will face either the Section 2 or 3 champion in a quarterfinal game at noon Saturday at SUNY Canton.

PARISHVILLE-HOPKINTON 5, HARRISVILLE 0

Emily Sloan scored one goal and added three assists as the No. 2 Panthers defeated the No. 7 Pirates (11-6-1) in a Class D quarterfinal in Parishville.

Parishville-Hopkinton (12-4-1) will face No. 3 Heuvelton in a semifinal at 5 p.m. Monday at Potsdam High School.

HEUVELTON 1, MADRID-WADDINGTON 0

Morgan Keenan made six saves for No. 3 Heuvelton in a Class D quarterfinal win over No. 6 Madrid-Waddington (9-7-2) in Heuvelton. Hannah Thornhill scored for Heuvelton (14-2-1) in the 74th minute.

LISBON 2, HAMMOND 1

Emily Dishaw scored in the 35th minute to lead No. 4 Lisbon past No. 5 Hammond (11-6) in a Class D quarterfinal at Clarkson.

Lisbon (13-3-2) will play top-seeded Chateaugay in a semifinal at 6:45 p.m. Monday at Potsdam High School.

Beth Crowley also scored for Lisbon, and Courtney Bova scored for Hammond.

CHATEAUGAY 3, COLTON-PIERREPONT 0

Courtney Boyea scored twice to send Chateaugay past No. 9 Colton-Pierrepont (5-11-1) in a Class D quarterfinal in Chateaugay.

Halee Tower also scored for Chateaugay (17-0), and Makayla Fleury made four saves.

GIRLS SWIMMING

CANTON WINS TITLE

Dasha Lapoint captured the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly and contributed to the first-place 200 medley and 400 free relays as Canton claimed the Section 10 title at SUNY Potsdam.

Canton finished with 326 points, while Massena was second with 285. Ogdensburg Free Academy (194) placed third.

Angelina Domena won the 500 free and swam on the two winning relays for Canton.

Massena’s Laura Hartman captured the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, and OFA’s Susie Morrow took the 200 free and 100 backstroke.
