MECHANICVILLE,NY- Saverio D. Sam Spano, 65, of River Road, Hemstreet Park, died Saturday morning, Nov. 3rd, at Albany Medical Center, after a brief illness.
Born in Watertown, NY, April 13, 1947, he was the son of late Philip and Carmella Amedeo Spano, and was a 1965 graduate of Watertown High School.
A graduate of Simmons School of Embalming and Mortuary Science in 1967, and also Hudson Valley Comm. College with an associates degree in science, Sam was a wastewater treatment tech and chemical mixer with the former General Electric Silicone Products plant in Waterford, NY for over 23 years, before retirement. Earlier, Sam had worked for the Veterans Hospital in Albany for 10 years.
Sam was a faithful communicant of Transfiguration South Parish (St. Bonaventure) of Melrose and formerly of the Assumption-St. Paul Catholic Church of Mechanicville.
A quiet, helpful and caring man, Sam was devoted to his wife and son, and was a friend of many, many people.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Elizabeth Schmidt Spano, who he married in 1969, his son Friar Nicholas Spano OFM CONV of Syracuse, a brother Natale (Connie) Spano of Lowville, sister Florence Martino and brother Dominic (Susan) Spano of all of Watertown, sister-in-law Loretta Spano of California, his father and mother in law Emil and Mary Schmidt of Melrose, brother-in-law Dan (Cheryl Gowie) Schmidt of White Creek, NY, along with nieces and nephews.
Sam was predeceased by his brother Joseph Spano and brother-in-law Emil Schmidt, Jr.
Sams family thanks Drs. Gallichio, Conti and Fabian, the Renal Transplant team at Albany Medical Center, and Dr. Charles Sulzman and Nurse Sharon for their unending care, compassion and concern for Sam and his family.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated TODAY, Wednesday, Nov. 7th at 11 AM at Transfiguration South Parish, Melrose, with burial in St. Johns Cemetery, Schaghticoke.
Calling hours were held at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville on Tuesday from 4-7 PM.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Kidney Transplant Program of Albany Medical Ctr, 43 New Scotland Ave., Albany, 12208, Transfiguration Parish or Assumption Church Food Pantry of Syracuse, 808 N. Salina St., Syracuse, 13208 in respectful memory of Saverio Sam Spano.
