CARTHAGE — In an effort to aid some of the 30,000 New York State Electric and Gas Corporation customers who were left without power in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, employees of Slack Chemical hauled 66 pallets of bottled water to the town of Liberty last weekend.

Jerry Vecchio, owner of Blue Mountain Springs Water, Watertown, contacted Paul Shanahan requesting Slack’s assistance in delivering to the stricken area. With approval from Slack owner Robert Sturtz for the use of fleet vehicles, two of Slack Chemical’s drivers, William Martle and Kurk Jackson, volunteered to make the delivery. The drivers picked up water at Sam’s Club in Watertown and at Nirvana Water, Boonville, and transported it to Sullivan County. Once in Liberty, local municipalities and fire departments distributed the water.

“It was nice to be part of the effort,” Mr. Jackson said, noting he had provided similar aid in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

“It’s a privilege to be part of it,” Mr. Sturtz said.

Thomas J. Williams, director of regulatory affairs for Slack, said the company is committed to make additional deliveries if needed. He noted the area is in the Catskill Mountains with many trees and poles down making power restoration difficult.
