The Chateaugay girls soccer team got a chance to celebrate Saturday afternoon, but the Massena girls and Heuvelton boys teams were not as fortunate.

Chateaugay (20-0) earned a trip to the state Class D final four with a 1-0 overtime victory over Section 7’s Elizabethtown-Lewis at Potsdam High School.

Hannah Cook scored the goal for the Bulldogs, who will travel to Tompkins-Cortland Community College in Dryden for a state semifinal game at 2:30 p.m. next Saturday against an opponent to be determined. Section 11’s Smithtown Christian faced Section 9’s Livingston Manor in a first-round game Saturday and the winner will meet Section 2’s Loudonville Christian on Tuesday to determine who faces Chateaugay.

Massena’s girls had a lead against Section 3’s Jamesville-DeWitt, but fell 2-1 in a Class A quarterfinal at SUNY Canton.

Heuvelton’s boys were crushed 7-0 by three-time defending state champion Chazy in a Class D boys quarterfinal at Potsdam High School.

Cook, the Northern Athletic Conference East Division’s Defensive Most Valuable Player, switched gears and went on the offensive, recording the game’s lone goal to propel the Bulldogs into the final four.

Playing in the first of the two, 10-minute extra sessions, Cook received a touch pass from NAC East Division co-offensive MVP Alexis Beach and proceeded to race past a trio of Elizabethtown-Lewis defenders to the near post to the right of Lions goalie Kearsten Ashline.

As Ashline made a move to come out for the ball, Cook gently sideswiped the ball, changing its direction toward the far corner of the goal, with the ball rolling across the goal line with the Chateaugay players erupting into a joyous celebration. The game-winner came with six minutes, 28 seconds left in the first overtime session.

“We were due, we were due,” Chateaugay coach Steve Lang said. “We had multiple chances throughout the game. We finally finished one off.”

Chateaugay dominated the game offensively from the outset, firing two shots at the Elizabethtown-Lewis’ net inside the first two minutes of the game. The Bulldogs even disposed of Ashline for over eight minutes in the first half with a bloody nose, as Courtney Boyea, a co-MVP with Beach, sent both her knee and the ball straight to the goalie’s nose as Ashline came out to make a diving stop. Backup goalie Emma Disogra had three of the 17 total saves for the Lions (12-7-1).

Elizabethtown-Lewis wasn’t without their chances, as starting Chateaugay goalie Makayla Fleury was also tested and had to leave the game after getting a foot to the head after stopping one of the Lions’ scoring chances.

The Bulldogs also had to use their backup keeper, as Holly Zeldenrust made one save during her three minutes. The two Chateaugay goalies combined for six saves in picking up the shutout.

JAMESVILLE-DEWITT 2, MASSENA 1

Maddie Devereaux and the Red Rams (18-1-2) have not been forced to come from behind very much this season. But the Section 3 champions found themselves trailing Massena 1-0 with less than 22 minutes to play in the Class A quarterfinal.

Jamesville-DeWitt rallied on goals by co-captains Jessica Holmes and Devereaux, with 21 and 13 minutes to play, respectively, to deny a gallant effort by the Red Raiders (15-2-1) and come away with a victory.

Holmes’ dead-on shot just eluded Massena keeper Courtney Manley for the 1-1 tie, and then Devereaux’s goal was of the highlight-reel variety. The senior turned just outside the 18-yard line and blasted the ball just under the crossbar for the game-winner.

“We haven’t been down very much this year, and my shot wasn’t very good for most of the game today, but I’ll take five bad ones for that one I scored on,” said Devereaux, who scored her ninth goal of the year to go along with her 19 assists.

Massena held off J-D with a valiant defensive effort over the first 58 minutes of play as Manley (12 saves) was ably aided by a Raider back line that included Marissa Manley, Kaleigh Zappia, Erin Francis and Nicole Morgan.

The Raiders broke through three minutes into the second half when Iestha Porter fed a through ball to Dominique Valancius, who burst down the left wing and beat J-D keeper Allison Butler to the far right corner.

“We had the lead but we just couldn’t hold it,” Valancius said. “It’s very tough to have (my career) end. I’m really going to miss it and miss the coaches and teammates.”

J-D advances to the state final four for the first time.

“I wasn’t sure how they would react to being down, We were hoping they’d keep on knocking on the door and finally get one and they did,” J-D coach Hayley Nies said. “Maddie has a great shot. I’m glad she had some space and was able to place it. There aren’t many goaltenders who are going to stop that shot.”

BOYS

CHAZY 7, HEUVELTON 0

Brandon Laurin added three more goals to his resume, giving him 44 for the season, as Section 7’s Chazy (19-0-1) dominated the Bulldogs (13-4-2).

“Chazy is a very talented team,” Heuvelton coach Dave Steele said. “They show what you can do if start playing soccer when you are little and really stick with it. And I have to credit my guys, they all brought special talents to our team, which had an historic season for our school. They were very excited today about trying to knock off the No. 1 team in the state. We held them scoreless for 15 minutes, which was a good effort.”

Despite generating a series of threatening crosses, the Eagles were held scoreless for the first 15 minutes by the Bulldog backfield and a series of nice stops by goaltender Chris Power (20 saves).

Brendan Laurin broke through by scoring his 42nd goal of the season 25:49 before the half on a quick counter after goaltender Kyle Bissonette stopped a hard shot by Joe McDonnell that proved to be the only save of the day by two Chazy keepers.

Laurin ran onto a flick header from Josh Barriere and buried a 25-yard shot.

Laurin netted the Eagles’ third goal with a whip header off a cross from David Poitras, took a throw-in from Barriere and scored off a dribble drive 51 seconds into the second half and used a long run to set up Barriere for a redirect right in front of the net.

The other Chazy markers saw Nathan Reynolds score unassisted with a close range header in a goal-mouth scramble, Hayden Guay convert a sharp-angle chip shot off a diagonal pass from Justin Brothers, and Craig Botten use a close range half volley off a pass from Derrick Drake.
