Every second Sunday of the month for a year and a half, the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 18057 Route 3, has hosted a fellowship dinner. But Sunday marked the first time a group outside the church has offered to serve the meal.

“They need to experience what community service is all about,” said Anna Volpe, troop leader for the multi-age Girl Scout Troop 50051 from Sackets Harbor.

“It’s around the time of giving and they need to learn what giving is all about.”

Ms. Volpe’s troop decided to help at the dinner after a troop mother suggested it.

“We call it a fellowship dinner, not a soup kitchen, because it’s for those who are looking for companionship. It’s a social outlet for some,” explained organizer Janice L. Hibbler.

Community members were welcome to join the dinner, prepared that morning by church members. Every dinner is vegetarian and free. This month’s dinner was a Thanksgiving feature that included homemade pies, sweet potatoes and mashed potatoes.

The next dinner will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 9.
