Bulgaria native Monica P. Atanasova’s homemade desserts appeal first to the eyes, then to the taste buds. The homemade cakes and cookies appeal to the eyes first because their meticulous designs resemble baked goods that line shelves in European cafes.

To be launched by Mrs. Atanasova in early December at the historic Paddock Arcade on Public Square, Europe Cakes will feature innovative cakes and cookies adorned in colorful frosting made by Mrs. Atanasova to fit any occasion. Baked goods sold at her store will include elegant wedding cakes, Italian- and European-style cookies and delicacies such as tiramisu, a layered Italian dessert made with coffee-soaked ladyfingers, whipped cream and mascarpone cheese.

“My mom used to make all of these Italian desserts when I was growing up,” said Mrs. Atanasova, who worked at Alteri’s Bakery on Waterman Drive for the past three years before deciding to blaze her own trail as an entrepreneur. “In Europe they have different styles of cakes and use thin layers of fondant cream to decorate. I use my imagination to design them.”

The shop will sell a range of customized desserts and include display cakes made by Mrs. Atanasova, who has decorated baked goods as a hobby for 12 years. Tables also will be available for customers to socialize over a cup of coffee and treats.

Mrs. Atanasova immigrated from Bulgaria with her husband, Atanas P. “Nasko” Atanasov, in 2003, when he was hired as a network administrator for Bernier, Carr & Associates after graduating from Jefferson Community College.

Along with the baked goods offered at the shop, she will continue selling desserts to three local businesses she’s partnered with for the past six months: Riccardo’s Market on Holcomb Street, the Cheese Store on outer Arsenal Street and Clover Valley Pizza on Route 12E in Brownville.

Mrs. Atanasova has sharpened her skills over the years by enrolling in courses taught by famous cake decorators. Her training has included courses with Food Network cake decorator Colette Peters in New York City and Debbie Brown, a renowned cake decorator and author in Boston.

“I look for inspiration from everything,” Mrs. Atanasova said when asked how she generates ideas. “It could be a postcard, a drawing from my daughter or parts of a small bottle.”

Europe Cakes will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, call Mrs. Atanasova at 788-3142 or email her at europecakes@yahoo.com.
