CARTHAGE — Carthage’s Shayne Brady will enter his senior year of wrestling with 172 wins on his belt and a letter of intent to attend North Carolina State University.

“I’m really excited to go there; excited to start my college career,” said Brady, who signed a letter of intent to wrestle with Division I school on Wednesday.

The son of James and Michelle Brady finished his junior year with an impressive record of 38-2.

“Probably the last person we’ve had from Carthage (to sign with a Division I school) was Mike Hadley and he took third in states,” Carthage varsity wrestling coach Don Dorchester said. “There’s no reason Shayne shouldn’t leave being the school’s first state champion and carry (more than) 200 career wins.” Hadley graduated in 2003.

Last season, Brady wrestled in the 170-pound weight class. In his pursuit of the Division I state title, he fell in the final round to Dan Spurgeon of Plainedge. Brady was the first wrestler in Carthage history to reach a state championship match. Four other Carthage wrestlers have gone to states before him.

“He’s an extremely good athlete, but an outstanding man,” Dorchester said. “The time he has put in year-round is unbelievable and pretty much what’s gotten him to this point.”

Brady has been wrestling at the varsity level since he was in the seventh grade. He volunteers his free time to help others learn wrestling.

The senior said he considers his two older brothers to be his role models.

“They’ve gone through everything I’m going through ... I really respect them for all that,” Brady said.

Kelsey Brady signed to play soccer for Division II American International College in 2011, while older brother Pat was signed to Division I University at Buffalo for wrestling back in 2009.

Brady, who turned down offers from Virginia, Maryland and West Point, plans to major in health sciences. At N.C. State, he will wrestle at 184 pounds, which is the same weight class that Wolfpack head coach Pat Popolizio placed No. 1 in the country during his senior year at Oklahoma State.
