Watertown Family Y looks for new day care director

The Watertown Family YMCA Day Care is looking for a new director because the former director did not complete the qualifications for the job due to a family issue and had to be dismissed.

Director Jollivette R. Richards was let go from her job last week, according to YMCA Executive Director Peter W. Schmitt.

“Jollivette was a wonderful person,” he said. “It’s just unfortunate.”

Mrs. Richards was partially through a bachelor’s degree program in child care to complete the licensing requirements of the state Office of Child and Family Services.

“Unfortunately, she didn’t fulfill that plan of study,” Mr. Schmitt said. Family obligations prevented her from completing the degree.

Parents of children who attend the day-care program at 514 Washington St. were informed about the change in a letter dated Monday.

“Recently, we have had some changes occur at our Daycare,” Childcare Branch Director Bridgette Gates wrote. “Due to an OCFS licensing mandate, our director, Jollivette Richards, will no longer be at the Daycare.”

Mrs. Richards had worked as the Y day care director for more than a year and for the Y “on and off” for about 10 years, Mr. Schmitt said.

He said he wanted to offer her another position but none was available.

The Y anticipates a new day care director to be in the position by the new year. Mr. Schmitt said he has already started interviewing promising candidates.

“It will probably be someone outside of the system,” he said.
