Privateers move to 6-4 overall after blanking Dashers

Following a rough stretch last week, the Thousand Island Privateers are getting well at home.

Goalie Matt Anthony made 45 saves, and Justin MacDonald and Chris Greene each scored two goals as Thousand Islands blanked the Danville Dashers, 5-0, in a Federal Hockey League clash on Thursday night at Watertown Municipal Arena.

“It’s definitely a big win because we lost the last few at home,” Anthony said. “We never want to lose at home as well as do well on the road, so this is a huge game out there.”

Anthony made 21 saves in the third period to secure his second shutout of the season for the Privateers (6-4), both against the last-place Dashers (2-6).

“He played well for us last year,” Thousand Islands coach Paul Kelly said of Anthony. “But this year he’s taken it to another level and it’s great to see.”

Thousand Islands, which defeated Cape Cod on Saturday to end a three-game losing streak, won for the first time at home since defeating Williamsport on Oct. 27 during its season-opening weekend.

“This was a good effort by our guys,” Kelly said. “We should do well in our games at home and that’s important if you want to be successful in this league.”

After scoring two goals in the first period, the Privateers held off Danville in the second and MacDonald provided the back-breaking goal by scoring unassisted 1:30 into the final period as Thousand Islands built a 3-0 advantage.

“Our starts haven’t been the greatest and tonight was not the one we wanted,” MacDonald said. “But it one of our better ones and we got those two goals. ... We’ve had some team meetings and talks and now we’re starting to really play as a team.”

Thousand Islands would go on to add two goals — a power-play tally each from Greene and Michael Fransen.

“It was a team effort and everybody played well in front of me,” Anthony said.

The Privateers also killed off all six Danville power plays, including two in the second period while leading by only two goals.

“That’s one we’ve really had success with this year,” Anthony said of the Privateers’ penalty killing. “We definitely take pride in that.”

Greene opened the scoring in the first period as he knocked a Peter Campbell rebound past St. Pierre at 13:47.

Nearly four minutes later, the Privateers then capitalized on a turnover as MacDonald scored on a wrister from the left faceoff circle at 17:34 for a 2-0 lead.

Josselin St. Pierre finished with 32 saves for Danville in the fourth game of a six-game road trip,

“We just didn’t get the bounces tonight,” Danville coach Rob Schweyer said. “You never want to say the referees are an excuse. But when things weren’t falling in place for us, we didn’t battle through that and you need to find ways to do that.”
