POTSDAM - Potsdam Central school officials are foregoing having an auction in the community for items no longer needed by the district and plan to place items ranging from textbooks to curbing on an internet auction site.

“We’ll put it up on the Auctions International site and see if we can get any value,” Superintendent Patrick H. Brady said.

He said he had research questions raised by school board members to determine if there were better methods to dispose of items included in the initial auction list and if it made sense to sell other items.

Mr. Brady noted the issues had been raised during a school board discussion on the initiallist of unneeded items district administrators had recommended placing on the auction block.

“The list raised some questions about the disposal of textbooks, concrete curbs, refrigerators and a couple of other items,” he noted.

He said the refrigerators taken out over the summer, for example, had already beendisposed of largely for scrap. “We were able to break even without having to pay to dispose of the freon,” according to Potsdam Central’s school superintendent.

“We looked into donating the old textbooks, but we couldn’t find a place to send them with no shipping costs,” Mr. Brady noted.

He said he found during his research there were missions that would accept textbooks in specific content areas. Social studies textbooks drew little interest, he said, because they are veiwed as being ethnocentric. “We were able to get rid of some foreign language books,” he pointed out.

Building and Grounds Superintendent Robert Brothers said the district no longer had a need for the bumper style parking lot curbing it would be placing on the auction block.

“It had been used in front of the elementary school and was lined up on the pavement to segregate the parking area and the sidewalk. Sidewalks were put in everywhere with curbing in the last capital project. I can’t see us every using these again,” he said.

Potsdam Central school officials said they have already benefitted from Auctions International. The district recently used the auction site of surplus government equipment and materials to buy a plow truck for $13,970 from the town of Marcy.

“Our mechanics drove to the town of Marcy to obtain the vehicle, which isreportedly in great condition. By all accounts, this is a great buy for the district, which willreplace the existing one which is beyond repair,” Mr. Brady said.

“It’s in great shape,” Mr. Brothers concurred, “and the old truck is pretty well spent.”
