DEXTER — General Brown Central School District’s bus garage roof may get a complete overhaul.

While the Board of Education awaits final word on an agreement with its insurance company to replace 9,400 square feet of roof that was destroyed by an April fire, the board will mull a small capital project to redo an additional 8,500 square feet of the roof.

“All of its roofs are out of warranty,” said Pamela S. Beyor, chairwoman of Bernier, Carr & Associates, a Watertown architecture and engineering firm.

Ms. Beyor said the portion destroyed by the fire is above the bus bays, while about 5,800 square feet is above the maintenance and office area and about 2,700 square feet is above a storage area. Some seams, particularly in the portions that aren’t above bus bays, are starting to deteriorate. The bus garage is at 17704 Cemetery Road.

A state Education Department-required buildings condition survey was last conducted in 2010, Ms. Beyor said, and it stated that parts of the garage roof had begun to deteriorate.

“The report is that all the roof is in rough shape and out of warranty,” District Superintendent Stephan J. Vigliotti Sr. said.

Repairing portions of the roof that weren’t affected by the fire, which also destroyed 20 of the district’s 23 buses, would have to be done through a $350,000 capital project. That would require voter approval.

“To tie those two concepts together, if you do that, you might also want to look at the lifts on the bus garage,” Ms. Beyor said. The projects “wouldn’t be simultaneously, but within six to eight months.”

One of the bus garage’s two lifts is not operational.

Mr. Vigliotti said that lift work could reach close to $200,000 and that capital work would be eligible for state aid.

Board Vice President Jeffrey West asked Ms. Beyor at the November meeting whether proceeding with the capital project would slow the insurance-related work. Ms. Beyor assured him it would not.

Board member John G. Hardy requested Ms. Beyor look into the cost of portable lifts, which might save space, he said.

More information is expected to be available at the board’s meeting at 6 p.m. Dec. 10 in the cafeteria of the junior-senior high school, 17643 Cemetery Road.
