WEST LEYDEN — A 73-year-old West Leyden man was jailed Sunday on an assault charge.

Lewis County sheriff’s deputies charged Herbert T. Kempkes, 4059 Mud Lake Road, with third-degree assault. He was arraigned in Lewis Town Court and sent to Lewis County jail, Lowville, on $500 bail.

Mr. Kempkes was accused of hitting Katherine A. Brown in the face several times during a domestic dispute at his residence. Deputies said they found Ms. Brown in the adjacent garage when they arrived at the home.
