Following a canines alert, narcotics officers returned to the site of a vehicle stop along Interstate 81 about a week ago and discovered a discarded condom containing 50 packets of heroin, according to the Metro-Jeff Drug Task Force.
That recovery late on Nov. 21 prompted the arrest Monday of a New York City man. Daniel D. Renvill, 19, Bronx, is being held in the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building on a charge of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Bail was set at $25,000 by Ellisburg Town Justice Peter C. Payne.
He also is wanted in New York City in connection with a high-speed chase and unlawful imprisonment, according to a task force detective, and faces an additional charge here of false personation.
Detectives said Mr. Renvill was a passenger in a car that was halted for alleged failure to keep right about 6:30 p.m. Nov. 21. While Deputy Jeffrey M. Froelich was checking the unidentified motorist, his K-9, Lobo, gave an alert that led to suspicion that drugs were in the vehicle, a detective said. The four occupants were ordered from the car and were taken to the PSB, and the vehicle was towed. A search warrant was obtained, but the subsequent search of the auto yielded only a small amount of marijuana, the detective said.
The four people were released, including Mr. Renvill, who allegedly had used his brothers identification, the detective said.
Investigators returned that night to the vehicle stop site with Deputy Froelich and his dog, and they found the heroin-stuffed condom.
Despite the number of tiny packets in the condom, along with rice mixed in to keep the substance dry, the collection was smaller than the size of a golf ball, the detective said. It was given a street value of about $1,500.
A search for Mr. Renvill ended late Monday morning when he was seen walking at State and William streets, police said. He subsequently admitted that he had discarded the heroin in the darkness while being escorted to a patrol car.
No traffic summonses were issued to the driver, but a charge of unlawful possession of marijuana is pending against one of the other passengers, the detective said.
At the time of the vehicle stop, Mr. Renvill was being given a ride from Syracuse, where he had arrived by bus.
