OFA Girls Basketball Preview

Court sense is very difficult to coach and a commodity in great demand for a high school basketball team.

OFA Girls Basketball Coach Lynn Blevins feels that court sense and savy will be a strength of his 2012-13 team which will open its season on Friday playing South Glens Falls at Queensbury High School at 5:30 p.m. in the Coaches Vs Cancer Shootout.

“This is a very smart group of players, one of the smartest teams that I have coached. They know the game and they mesh very well,” said Blevins who will be assisted by Mike Martin and Ryan Farrell.

“We plan to press as much as we can and be very aggressive on defense. We will have to play that way because were are not very tall.”

Starting with their already challenging NAC Central campaign, which became more challenging with the return of Canton and the addition of reigning Class B Champion Salmon River, the Lady Devils will once again play an extremely difficult schedule. Along with the season opener against New Hartford the Devils will play two games with Carthage and a matchup with small school powers in Hammond or Madrid-Waddington in the Ben Cordwell Memorial Tournament.

Leading the Devils into a new season will be a core of returnees from last season’s 8-11 squad. A rotation which includes seniors in guard-forward Shannon Tooley, forward Felicia Barr (5’ 10”) and guard Jocelyn Fifield, a Second Team All-NAC Central selection in junior guard Meg Dodge who is the leading scorer among the veterans and three sophomores in point guard Riley Luckie and forwards Susie Morrow and Courtney Sherwin.

First year varsity players are: senior guard Mary Burns and juniors Paige Perry (F) and Sam King (F) and sophomore Mollee Ahrens (G) moving up from the junior varsity level.
