Former Times All-North standout Patrick Gibbons of Carthage has been one of the key members of the Wagner College football team, which has reached the Football Championship Series quarterfinals.
Gibbons, a 6-foot-1, 250-pound sophomore fullback, has started nine of the 12 games for the Seahawks (9-3), providing strong blocking for one of the top rushing teams in the country.
Wagner, which lost its first three games, has won nine in a row and captured the Northeast Conference title. The Seahawks beat Colgate 31-20 last week in the first round, and will travel to No. 4-ranked Eastern Washington for a quarterfinal at 6 p.m. on Saturday to be televised on ESPN3.
After graduating from Carthage, Gibbons attended Milford Academy for a year before heading to Wagner. He also started nine games as a freshman last season.
Gibbons also plays lacrosse for the Seahawks.
■ Gibbons former Carthage teammate, Jolyon Davis, has helped unbeaten and seventh-ranked Hobart College gain a spot in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals for the first time in school history.
A 6-0, 190-pound junior free safety, Davis recorded four tackles last week as Hobart defeated Wittenberg, 35-10. He also had four solo tackles in the 38-20 first-round win over Washington & Lee.
Hobart (12-0) plays a 1 p.m. quarterfinal Saturday at No. 4 St. Thomas, Minn. (12-0).
Davis, an All-Liberty League selection, has recorded 31 solo tackles, 10 assists and one interception this season.
