Several Ogdensburg service clubs have gathered together to help fellow club members in another part of the state affected by Hurricane Sandy.
When Ogdensburg Builders Club members learned of the level of devastation downstate, they reached out to members of Kiwanis and Aktion Club to help raise money for students in Westbury, Long Island, a town hit hard by the tropical storm that swept the east coast.
Key Club and Builders members will hold a bottle drive from 9 to 11 a.m. Dec. 8 at the NYSARC bottle redemption center, 330 State St. An account has been set up there.
If they want to donate, well also pick up their bottles, said Key Club President Charlotte J. Miller. The groups hope to raise $2,000, Ms. Miller said.
At this time, everyone is giving to everything, said Builders Club Advisor Nancy Skelly. We decided any amount is better than nothing.
The groups regularly hold fundraisers and volunteer on behalf of several St. Lawrence County organizations, including the St. Lawrence Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the annual Harvest Walk/Run.
The groups meet annually at a statewide conference each year, which both Ogdensburg clubs and Long Island groups attend. While the groups do not know each other, Ms. Miller said that is not important.
