MORRISTOWN - It was a great day for the Wildcats.
Gouverneur Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball team swept top honors at the Morristown Holiday Tournament on Saturday dropping Frontier League foe LaFargeville.
The Wildcats earned a 49-33 win over the Red Knights in the varsity tournament and Colton-Pierrepont claimed consolation honors over Morristown 43-5.
The JV Wildcats downed LaFargeville 24-17 for the title while Morristown lost 34-16 to Colton-Pierrepont in the consolation game.
Gouverneur 49, LaFargeville 33: Leading 26-20 at halftime, the Wildcats increased their lead to 36-27 after three keyed by four key points from Danielle Bullock. At 5:38 of the fourth, Tournament MVP Rachel Knowlton buried a three and the Wildcats scored nine straight to take a 48-30 lead.
When we were patent offensively, we made things happen. We showed balanced and this team is a good group to work with, said Assistant Coach John Wells, who filled in for coach Frank Bush who was attending his sons NCAA Diviision III quarter-final football contest this weekend.
Hailey Eastons guard play produced six points and earned her All Tourney honors. Alisha Way, the Wildcats Sportsmanship Award winner, led all scorers with 11 followed by seven from Knowlton, five from Kirstin Roberts and four each from Danielle McCormick, Rebecca Bulsiewics, and Jessica Rotundo.
All Tourney selection Lauren Labiendo hit two threes and scored 11 points for LaFargeville. Jordan Sharp added seven for LaFargeville while Krysti Brow and Sportmanship Award recipient Jarika Nuffer chipped in six and five.
C-P 43, Morristown 5: It just takes five. The 1-2 Colts proved just that winning the consolation game.
All Tourney selection Andrea Aldous scored nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds and collected four steals and Morgan Doyle provided 13 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists. Sportsmanship Award winner Kylie McKinley added 11 points, seven steals and three rebound while Hailey Hennessy added six points, seven steals and three boards. Autumn Clark collected four points, seven boards and three steals.
Erica Baldwin scored two points for MCS. Sportmanship Award winner Bailey Holmes hit two free throws while All Tournament Team selection Jordyn Tulley logged a single point.
Gouverneur claimed the JV title 24-17 over LaFargeville as MVP Emily Bush scored eight points, All Tourney selection Shannon Knowlton added eight and sportsmanship winner Catherine Andrews scored six. Sportsmanship Award winner Logan Labiendo scored five and All Tourney selection Alison Hoover tallied four points for the Knights.
Morristown earned third place with a 34-16 win over Colton-Pierrepont.
Sportsmanship award winner Jessica Geddes scored 11 and Logan Green added seven to lead the winners. Taylor Piercey, who scored 10 points in a 27-18 loss to Gouverneur on Friday, logged six against C-P and earned All Tournament honors. Haley Whitmarsh and Mikayla Dulmage each scored two points while Elissa Baldwin added four.
Eve Whalen tallied six and Kelsi Gilbert and Morgan Burns added four each for the Colts.
Hermon-DeKalb successfully opened its 2012-13 NAC West Season with a 67-22 win over Edwards-Knox.
Clarissa Davis generated 17 points including three threes and posted nine boards and five steals for H-D. Bridget Rust hit two threes in a 14 point and six rebound effort. Morgan Stott added nine points and six boards while Courtney Harrington (five boards) and Kasey ODonnell (six boards, six assists) each added eight points.
Katie Smith scored 12 for E-K and Jadilynn Bullock added five. Hermon-DeKalb plays Heuvelton on Tuesday.
