Canton man charged with DWI, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident

CANTON — A Canton man is facing charges that he drove while intoxicated and left the scene of a personal injury accident after a female student from Saint Lawrence University was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street.

Canton police responded to a 911 call at 12:30 a.m. Sunday for a hit-and-run with a personal injury on Park Street in Canton, just past Brewer Bookstore.

Police then stopped Dustin W. Rookey, 25, of 38 Pollock Road, on Route 11 near DeKalb under investigation for DWI.

According to police, Mr. Rookey was brought back to the Police Department, where his BAC was tested at 0.12 percent.

He was issued tickets for driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Canton police did not release the name of the victim.

She was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Mr. Rookey was released on his own recognizance. He will appear in Canton Town Court on Jan. 2 at 1:30 p.m.
