Ogdensburg hospital lays off six to ease budgetary pressure

OGDENSBURG — Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center announced Monday that it has laid off six workers and eliminated a total of nine positions in order to cope with increased costs and shrinking revenue.

The hospital said in a news release that duties will also be realigned for 13 other employees, including several managers. It did not say in which departments the affected employees work. Spokeswoman Laura C. Shea could not immediately be reached for comment.

“Like hospitals nationwide, federal cuts to reimbursement require the hospital to do more with less. So far this year, Claxton-Hepburn has provided $950,000 in charity care, a figure that has nearly doubled since last year,” the release stated. “Claxton-Hepburn is faced with balancing the costs of providing care with these declining reimbursements. Through October, growth in operating expenses has exceeded patient revenues.”

The hospital employs 671 full- and part-time workers and carries an annual payroll of $54,250,000.
