A man from Ohio surrendered Monday to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department for his arrest on allegations that in 2009, he used a stolen debit card to pay his $3,368 truck repair bill at AAMCO Transmission, 595 Coffeen St.

Matthew A. Riehl, 25, Logan, Ohio, additionally used the same card at five locations at Fort Drum and in the town of LeRay to “attempt” to obtain cash and make purchases for a total of $2,972, the sheriff’s office alleges.

Mr. Riehl was arraigned by City Judge Eugene R. Renzi on charges of third-degree grand larceny, attempted first-degree identity theft and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, and was released without bail to await grand jury action. His surrender on warrants issued in 2010 was arranged by the Jefferson County district attorney’s office and public defender’s office, according to the sheriff’s office.

The use of the card, belonging to Lucas A. Zamora, occurred on one day, Aug. 12, 2009, according to sheriff’s documents. Attempts were made to use the card at two KeyBank branches on Fort Drum, two AAFES business sites at Fort Drum, Bradley’s Military, 26444 Route 11, and Walmart Supercenter, Route 11, the documents allege.

The card was stolen from Mr. Zamora’s vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. Mr. Zamora was a Fort Drum soldier at the time and was ill in Watertown, a detective said. His colleagues drove his auto back to Fort Drum, where Mr. Riehl, also a soldier, had access to the vehicle, the detective said.
