HEUVELTON - As the Heuvelton Central Girls Baskeball team left the floor at halftime trailing Hermon-DeKalb 27-17, Coach Rob Powers knew that two things had to happen for the Lady Bulldogs to turn things around.
They had to believe in their fullcourt press and they had to keep track of H-D sniper Clarissa Davis who had buried five three-pointers in a 17-point first half.
The Bulldogs (2-0 NAC West, 2-1) accomplished both directives impeccably and mixed in some timely outside shooting in a 23-12 third quarter to secure a 51-47 win over the defending NAC West champions.
I told the girls that we had to believe in the press and just go out and do it. They did it and got a very big win against a very good team which will be right there at the end, said Coach Powers.
Lexi Weidner had a very good all around game and covered Clarissa Davis as we were able to hold her scoreless in the second half. I was really happy to see Ashlyn Piercey step up and hit some big shots.
Weidner scored eight of her team- high 12 points in the third quarter and Logan Tallman (3 assists) scored all of her seven in the pivotal period. Piercey scored seven of her nine points in the second halfs with five in the fourth quarter while the sister combination of Maddie and Olivia St. Pierre made a steady stream contributions all over the floor in scoring nine points apiece.
Maddie St. Pierre collected six rebounds, four assists and made five of six free throws and Olivia St. Pierre finished with five rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots. Hannah Thornhill netted a second half three and Rachel Thornhill added a field goal.
Courtney Harrington supplied H-D (1-1 West, 2-1) with a similar interior skill package scoring 10 of her 13 points in the second half, grabbing eight rebounds and blocking five shots. Bridget Rust buried two third quarter threes scoring 13 points, Davis finished with a 17-poit, 10-rebound double-double and Kasey ODonell supplied a high-energy five steals and seven assists and Morgan Stott snatched four steals.
