The bold print on a recent article in the newspaper is very misleading: Cape town clerk to get 64 percent raise. If one reads the entire article, Supervisor Urban Hirschey does a fine job explaining this. If you don’t read the article, you are embarrassing a fine person and excellent town clerk.

This raises many questions.

(1) Do you know any other elected officials who are working for 64 percent less than their counterparts?

(2) Is this why the former town clerk was stealing so much, to make up the difference?

(3) Why are there many people making more money with less responsibility?

(4) When you hire on to the town Highway Department, you start at $18.25 an hour. After six months probation you go to $19.25 an hour. When you start in the village Department of Public Works, you start at $12.55 an hour. Why? Does it cost the village employees less for a loaf of bread or a gallon of gas?

(5) Why does the village DPW chief get a new truck to drive wherever he wants and makes as much or more than the town highway superintendent? At the same time, village employees receive far less pay than the town employees. The village employees are being treated like the town clerk. One would ask, why are we treating our village and town employees like illegal immigrants? When illegal immigrants complain, they are threatened with deportation. When our employees complain, they are labeled greedy or disgruntled and are told: if you don’t like it, leave.

(6) The elected officials are supposed to look out for their employees. It is obvious they are not.

We all know jobs are hard to find in the north country. Folks, shouldn’t we really be taking better care of the men and women who take care of us?

In closing don’t worry about your taxes going up a few pennies. The elected officials have no problems getting what they want, or think we want, regardless of raising taxes.
