Golf program helps combat-wounded

As regional manager for the Salute Military Golf Association-New York Chapter I wish to thank our supporters here in our north country area for your generosity and outstanding patriotism where our program is concerned. Because of your support we were able this past season to teach 26 combat wounded from Fort Drum to play golf.

To the men and women combat-wounded this is not simply a game of golf, it is a step further in their rehabilitation, teaching them self-confidence, a regaining of concentration and the motivation to rebuild their lives. I could go on and on describing that which I have witnessed over the past three years where these brave young men and women are concerned, but instead let me share with you a letter I have in my possession explaining how one wounded warrior feels regarding our program. His feelings are also the feelings of many other such wounded warriors I have met, warriors who never stop thanking me for what we are doing for them.

“I appreciate everything you do for us, if you only knew how much golf means to us. I wanted to let you know more about my story without telling you in front of everyone.

“I tried to kill myself last February because of things that happened in Iraq. I didn’t want to heal or even think I had a problem. I have chronic PTSD with non-epileptic seizure disorder caused from all the stuff I’ve been through over there.

“My wife left me because I didn’t seek help and she didn’t want to be with someone that probably won’t work again in his life, because of the seizures and other things. Most times I know when they will be coming on but sometimes I don’t.

“Do you know the only thing that keeps me going after my wife left me and not being able to do the job I love? Golf, I never have seizures out there playing. It amazes me that something so frustrating at times, like golf can be, hasn’t made me mad since playing. Being out there clears my mind and I don’t think about anything but hitting that ball and doing what only I have right now. Every day I look forward to two things, playing golf and being able to see my child. If I didn’t have that I wouldn’t be anywhere right now. Therapy doesn’t help me, but golf does.

“Thank you so much for taking your time and helping people like me.”

So, to all you business owners who struggle so hard year-round, and to all of you who contribute from your hard-earned paychecks, I thank you all for helping me to bring these young men and women who have suffered so horrifically back into the world of the living. Because of you they know that if they can swing that golf club, they can do anything they put their minds to.
