HEUVELTON — The driver of a buggy escaped injury Tuesday afternoon after a Buick Enclave crashed into the buggy’s back left wheel.

The accident occurred at about 5 p.m. about two miles outside the village.

The Enclave, driven by Julia M. Guminiak, 52, of DeKalb Junction, took off the back left wheel of the buggy and did damage to other parts of the horse-drawn vehicle.

The buggy was driven by Jacob Gingrich, 43, of Heuvelton.

There were no injuries to either of the drivers or the horse.

Mr. Gingrich, who said he has never been in an accident involving a motor vehicle, was returning to Heuvelton from Ogdensburg and was alone when the accident occurred.

Ms. Guminiak said she didn’t see his vehicle in the dark, and that the kerosene lamp attached to the buggy wasn’t lit.

Mr. Gingrich said the light was lit and that the reflective tape outlining the back of his buggy should have made him visible to traffic.

State Trooper A.J. Buck said there is no law requiring buggies have a kerosene lantern on their vehicle.

No tickets were issued as a result of the accident.
