I am writing this to let the people of Lewis County know what an asset Daniel Taylor is to our community. Daniel has been in charge of the Lowville Food Pantry for the past several years and continues to do an amazing job. He, along with several faithful volunteers, are a lifeline to many people every day. He does not receive any salary for what he does.
If you are not familiar with the Lowville Food Pantry, let me give you some facts. The pantry is open Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The pantry gives a five-day emergency supply of food to those clients who qualify. Most of the funding comes from private donations. The Food Bank of Central New York also helps with the cost of utilities, equipment and food. Last month alone, 9,225 meals were served. Consider:
■ 37 percent of emergency food recipients are children under the age of 18.
■ 14 percent have no health insurance coverage.
■ 42 percent choose between paying for food and paying for utilities.
■ 24 percent have at least one employed family member.
■ Of those unemployed, 45 percent have lost their job within the last two years.
■ 69 percent have annual incomes below the official federal poverty line.
■ 47 percent have an annual income below $10,000.
During this season of giving please think of giving to the Lowville Food Pantry. Every dollar given goes to feed the people in Lewis County. The address is 7646 Forest Ave, Lowville, N.Y. 13367. Daniel can be reached at 376-7431. When you call, please thank him for the generous job he does.
