Norma F. Washburn, 78, of Marcy, died on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at Faxton St. Lukes Healthcare.
Norma was born July 19th 1934 in Rochester, NY, the daughter of Wilbur H. Stanton and Esther D. Beisheim Stanton. The family moved to Greece, NY, in 1938 where Norma attended Barnard Union Grade School graduating from the 7th grade there. In 1948 the family moved to the town of Theresa, N.Y., purchasing the old Slate family homestead near West Corners where they ran a cottage rental business on Hyde Lake. Norma always had fond memories of her life there. Eventually her parents were divorced and subsequently her mother married Glenn H. Hinman. Norma then lived with her mother and Glenn in the village of Theresa graduating from Theresa High School in 1952.
After graduating from high school, she was employed at New York Telephone Company in Watertown as an operator working as both a local operator in the old manual office and later as a toll operator after the advent of dial service.
In 1959, Norma married Francis A. Washburn of Black River, NY, at the Theresa United Methodist Church. They subsequently built a house on Duffy Road outside Watertown. During this period she and Francis became proud parents of three children, David, Stephen and Julie and Norma quit work to become a full time mother to her children. The family moved to Marcy, NY in 1969 and she and her husband have lived on Park Rd. in Marcy every since.
After her children started college in 1979, Norma went back to work at the Presbyterian Home of Central New York as a nurses aid. She worked there until 1986 and has since continued her association as a volunteer. Normas compassion allowed her to relate to the residents and she enjoyed interacting with both they and the employees. In 1995 she was selected as Volunteer of the Year because of her many contributions to the home.
Norma loved to fish and took advantage of every opportunity to do so including summers at Lake of the Woods as well as deep sea fishing on some of the many trips she and her husband took. She was also very fond of flowers and spent many hours in her flower gardens as well as taking care of her houseplants.
She was a long time member of the Maynard United Methodist Church and had served the church in many capacities. These included head of the United Methodist Women as well as their spiritual leader. She had also been a member of the choir, taught Sunday school, directed the vacation bible school program and in addition had also chaired many of the church dinners. Norma was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be sorely missed by her loving husband of 53 years, Francis A. Washburn and her three children and their spouses, David and Cathy Washburn of Northborough, MA., Stephen Washburn of Liverpool, NY. and Julie and Ronald Warehime of Finksburg, MD. as well as her five grandchildren Samantha Rose Washburn of Liverpool, John David Washburn and Kathryn Elizabeth Washburn of Northborough, MA and Brian Thomas Warehime and Leah Marie Warehime of Finksburg, MD.
