POTSDAM Community Performance Series will present a production of The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales at 3 p.m. Jan. 19 in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater at SUNY Potsdams Crane School of Music.
This is the second event in the 2012-13 CPS Meet the Arts Series.
The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales is produced by Chicago-based Griffin Theatre Company and is based on the award-winning childrens book of the same title by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith.
The play loosely follows the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, among other famous fairy tales. For example, after being captured by the giant, Jack tries to talk his way out of becoming a meal by telling fairy tales with his own twist. Featuring parodies of beloved stories such as Little Red Riding Hood, The Ugly Duckling and The Tortoise and the Hare, Jack distracts the giant through creative storytelling techniques.
CPS officials say the production is an ideal show for schoolchildren in pre-kindergarten through grade three, but it also can be enjoyed by the whole family.
The play is the third donation event in the CPS Share a Story Book drive, a season-long campaign to benefit area schools. In celebration of storytelling, CPS invites audience members to donate a new or gently used copy of their favorite book to be given to area schools later in the year. Donations will be accepted at the performance, as well as during CPS Box Office hours.
All book donations will enter patrons in a drawing to win two season tickets to the 2013-14 Meet the Arts Series.
Established in 1989, CPS at SUNY Potsdam is a college-community partnership presenting world-class performing artists and arts education opportunities in Northern New York.
