The state Department of Environmental Conservation has stocked Irondequoit Bay on Lake Ontario with lake herring, the department said Thursday.
In its release, the department noted that the lake used to host as many as seven whitefish species. The lake is now only is home to three: the lake whitefish, round whitefish and lake herring, which are in much reduced supply.
The juvenile lake herring that will be stocked this week originated from eggs collected by DEC staff in Chaumont Bay last November and December.
The restocking work is a combined project for DEC, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission and The Nature Conservancy.
